UNDP has always been fundamental in the development of programs and the organization of national efforts to support Syria and its neighboring countries since the onslaught of the Syria Crisis. Recently, UNDP has developed an outline of the countries in need and the projects aimed to help them. The original layout for this project portfolio was contracted by Sebastian Villar, and Green Group Studio was subsequently contracted to recreate it as an easily accessible online tool for the public, called Building Resilience. This mobile-friendly website describes, in detail, the objectives and activities of the various response plans laid out in Villar’s book.
Building Resilience is categorical, divided into six sections based on the countries in need:
- Syria
- Jordan
- Lebanon
- Iraq
- Egypt
- Turkey
Each section outlines a number of response plans necessary to replenish essential resources and ease the strain on the respective country. These detailed, colorfully imaged outlines provide summaries of project objectives, details about project activities, and the budget necessary to ensure the project’s complete fruition. At least one response plan has been provided for each of these six countries—with the maximum at eleven for the country of Jordon—to address the various issues brought about by the Syria Crisis.
The Syria Crisis, also called the Syrian Refugee Crisis, is a direct result of the ongoing Syrian Civil War. Nearing its fifth year, this war has claimed the lives of more than 300,000 people—half of which were believed to be innocent civilians—and the concurring crisis has displaced more than 11 million. Of this, seven million Syrians have been forced to evacuate their homes but remain in Syria, unable to leave the country. This massive shift in population distresses not only Syria but also the neighboring countries that have taken on more refugees than their resources can handle. These resources—the most basic provisions like food and medicine—are becoming scarcer for the people of Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt and Turkey; and it is these resources that UNDP is planning to replenish through the projects listed here:

We are very proud to have assisted the United Nations with the launch of Building Resilience, and even prouder to have done so in support of Syria and its neighbors. At its core, this website is an informational guide for anyone looking to make a difference by offering help to those in desperate need. And so, we ask you to do just that. By contributing to any one of these projects, you will be helping someone rebuild their home and their life.
