Booklet Sizing
The sizing of a booklet, also known as the trim size, refers to the dimensions of the booklet after the final cut has been made. The standard orientations for booklets are landscape, portrait, or square, each of which are available in a wide array of sizes. You can also create a custom dieline which allows you the flexibility of adding more creative elements like fold-in flaps or pockets. Green Group Studio’s team of graphic designers will collaborate with you closely to determine your needs and a booklet size that will effectively, yet beautifully, display your company’s information.
Binding Methods for Booklets
There are many options available to you when it comes to binding your multi-page booklet, including Saddle Stitch, Perfect Bound, and Spiral Bound. Stitch methods require the use of thread, wires, or staples to “stitch” the pages into place, while Bound methods use everything from glue to plastic spirals. The method that you ultimately choose to bind your booklet will depend on the function, number of pages, budget, and pre-determined timeline.
Paper Finishes
While it may be an afterthought to most people, paper type and finish play a crucial role in the overall look and feel of your final project. Companies are fortunate enough to have a wide variety of paper types, finishes, and weights to choose from depending on their needs. Those companies that desire a more luxurious looking and feeling booklet should consider 100 lb. coated paper (available in everything from gloss to matte), while those companies looking for a less formal presentation should stick to an 80 lb. uncoated paper type. Pagination: The Booklet Blueprint
Paginations are utilized like blueprints during the creation of print materials. When creating print material with multiple pages, each spread is equal to four pages; therefore, pages are added in multiples of four. This is something that should be kept in mind when laying out content for your booklet because if there is too much content for a planned number of pages, your only options would be to add four more pages or to reduce the amount of the desired content. If pages are added to accommodate the content overflow, images may be added to bring visual interest to the content.
Offset Printing vs Digital Printing
Offset printing is the process of burning artwork onto a metal plate, which is then transferred to a rubber blanket. While this option offers greater printing quality and cost effectiveness, it does have some drawbacks like high minimum quantities and long turnaround times.
Digital printing is the method of printing digital imagery directly onto a variety of paper stocks. As with offset printing, digital printing allows for good printing quality, but with the added advantage of small minimum print quantities and a faster turnaround time. However, this printing option requires a higher cost per printout.
