Hi Jarekt, your edit didn't work out as expected. 0x0a (talk) 11:05, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- 0x0a, thanks for letting me know. I did some experiments and found out that unlike templates parser function names have to use lower case spelling, so that was the issue with that edit. "#dir" instead of "#Dir". --Jarekt (talk) 12:29, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

Help with a template
[edit]Hello @Jarekt. The templates on Commons are a bit complicated; therefore I decided to write to you for some help. Basically, on May 27, 2019, a law on state property was enacted, which declared works of certain artist and 11 films public domain in Azerbaijan [1]. I wanted to create a template as {{SP-Azerbaijan}} (SP for state property; a term used for public domain), but saw there were many subpages and thought I'd screw it up. Could you help to create it? A {{{1|}}} and {{{2|}}} would be cool. Here's the text:
{{SP-Azerbaijan|2019|author}} → By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, the works of this author were declared a state property.
{{SP-Azerbaijan|2019|film}} → By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, this film were declared a state property.
Thank you! Toghrul R (talk) 16:04, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
- Toghrul R, Most Public domain templates on commons Start with "PD" so maybe we can name it {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan}} or {{DP-Azerbaijan}}? Also it is easier to use PD template if it does not have parameters so that we do not have to deal with the cases where they are missing or wrong, or at least decide on behavior of the template when that happens. So maybe {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019}} so we can add another template in case there is another law change. Another potential issue is works of multiple authors when one uses this template or works where someone combines a screen shot from SP movie with other content. In such a case a better design would be
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|author|Q3182477}} → By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, the works of John Smith were declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|film|Q189505}} → By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, film Jaws was declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|author}} → By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, the works of this author were declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|film}} → By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, this film was declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019}}, {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|hello}} → By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, this work was declared a state property.
- How does this sound? --Jarekt (talk) 13:41, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Jarekt thank you for the reply! Yes, creating a separate template for the 2019 version and having the naming convention are good ideas. It's been 5 years since the law adopted, so if a new one rolls out, we might simply create another. Toghrul R (talk) 16:52, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- Toghrul R, I Created preliminary version of {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019}}.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|author|Q3101199}} → By the Resolution No. 211 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, the works of Qatran Tabrizi were declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|film|Q6577803}} → By the Resolution No. 211 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, film Sevil was declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|author}} → By the Resolution No. 211 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, the works of this author were declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019|film}} → By the Resolution No. 211 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, this film was declared a state property.
- {{DP-SP-Azerbaijan-2019}} → By the Resolution No. 211 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, this work was declared a state property.
- Is there a list of Wikidata IDs (like d:Q3101199 for Qatran Tabrizi) for 35 authors whose works were listed. Also can you point me to some explanation of the concept of "state property" and why Azerbaijan's state property is equivalent to Public Domain, or allowed on Commons. --Jarekt (talk) 20:10, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

Feature news
- AbuseFilter editors and maintainers can now make a CAPTCHA show if a filter matches an edit. This allows communities to quickly respond to spamming by automated bots. [2]
- Stewards can now specify if global blocks should prevent account creation. Before this change by the Trust and Safety Product Team, all global blocks would prevent account creation. This will allow stewards to reduce the unintended side-effects of global blocks on IP addresses.
Project updates
- Nominations are open on Wikitech for new members to refresh the Toolforge standards committee. The committee oversees the Toolforge Right to fork policy and Abandoned tool policy among other duties. Nominations will remain open until at least 2024-08-26.
- One new wiki has been created: a Wikipedia in West Coast Bajau (

Igen issue
[edit]Hi Jarekt,
I have noticed an issue that appeared 1 or 2 weeks ago:
{{Igen|T|+|s=c|S*|gf}} is used to define a SVG Coat-of-arms (text-editor-created) without specifying the author, i.e. it's not meant to display a user's name, but since a recent change in a template it adds "by v." string, and now shows "this coat of arms was created with a text editor by v." while it was showing "this coat of arms was created with a text editor" only… (example) (Inkscape userless template ex. here)
Which is odd…
--Kontributor 2K (talk) 07:24, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
- Kontributor 2K I am always supper confused by Igen template, so many impenetrable short names and codes, which I am sure save space, but make the template calls in the files and source code of the template rather unreadable to me. I searched but so far did not figured out how string "this coat of arms was created with a text editor by v." is created. What is the recent changes in the template you mentioned? --Jarekt (talk) 18:45, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- The recent change is that it should not display the default-string "by v." and the end of the string "this coat of arms was created with a text editor", like it was before, and like it is on Inkscape-no-user-specified-created files, where it only displays "this coat of arms was created with Inkscape." and not "this coat of arms was created with Inkscape by v."…
- Changes have been made recently on Template:Created_with_Text_Editor, which may be the one concerned, and also on Template:Image_generation ("darkmode")…
- I'd love to debug by going back step-by-step on each change made, but luckily I'm not allowed to
- --Kontributor 2K (talk) 05:31, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- Kontributor 2K, I reverted my edit to Template:Created_with_Text_Editor. It is so odd that most of the time calling {{Autotranslate}} and
{{#invoke:Autotranslate|Autotranslate}}
gives identical results but sometimes it does not. I still could not create test case where the two differ, so it is a mystery why. Thanks for pointing it out. --Jarekt (talk) 13:42, 16 August 2024 (UTC)- Thank you,

Tech News: 2024-34
[edit]Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Feature news
- Editors who want to re-use references but with different details such as page numbers, will be able to do so by the end of 2024, using a new sub-referencing feature. You can read more about the project and how to test the prototype.
- Editors using tracking categories to identify which pages use specific extensions may notice that six of the categories have been renamed to make them more easily understood and consistent. These categories are automatically added to pages that use specialized MediaWiki extensions. The affected names are for: DynamicPageList, Kartographer, Phonos, RSS, Score, WikiHiero. Wikis that have created the category locally should rename their local creation to match. Thanks to Pppery for these improvements. [4]
Technical volunteers who edit modules and want to get a list of the categories used on a page, can now do so using the
categories
property ofmw.title objects
. This enables wikis to configure workflows such as category-specific edit notices. Thanks to SD001 for these improvements. [5][6]
Bugs status
Your help is needed to check if any pages need to be moved or deleted. A maintenance script was run to clean up unreachable pages (due to Unicode issues or introduction of new namespaces/namespace aliases). The script tried to find appropriate names for the pages (e.g. by following the Unicode changes or by moving pages whose titles on Wikipedia start with
Talk:WP:
so that their titles start withWikipedia talk:
), but it may have failed for some pages, and moved them to Special:PrefixIndex/T195546/ instead. Your community should check if any pages are listed there, and move them to the correct titles, or delete them if they are no longer needed. A full log (including pages for which appropriate names could be found) is available in phab:P67388.- Editors who volunteer as mentors to newcomers on their wiki are once again able to access lists of potential mentees who they can connect with to offer help and guidance. This functionality was restored thanks to a bug fix. Thank you to Mbch331 for filing the bug report. You can read about that, and 18 other community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week.
Project updates
- The application deadline for the Product & Technology Advisory Council (PTAC) has been extended to September 16. Members will help by providing advice to Foundation Product and Technology leadership on short and long term plans, on complex strategic problems, and help to get feedback from more contributors and technical communities. Selected members should expect to spend roughly 5 hours per month for the Council, during the one year pilot. Please consider applying, and spread the word to volunteers you think would make a positive contribution to the committee.
