I probably should have gone fishing the day before but at the time that weather forecast predicted more rain for Saturday with it looking better for Sunday. As it turned out there was barely any rain on Saturday and when I woke up Sunday morning and checked the radar pretty much all of the western part of the state was under some shade of green. I picked a spot that looked like it would have the least amount of rain for the day. I can't say if I made the right or not in regards to rain but I think I made the right decession.
The spot I picked was actually a place I had never fished before but one that I have had my eye on for many years. I figured that even if the rain had washed out the creek, it would still be a good time to scout it out for future trips. I gathered up my rain gear, a 2wt fiberglass rod, the usual fishing essentials and headed towards my destination.
It ended up taking my longer to get to the trail head mainly because I had trouble locating it. None of the maps had it marked very clearly, however after driving past it a couple of time I finally found it. The trail head looked easy enough, it appeared fairly well maintained and the initial grade didn't seem to steep. Having studied the topo maps before I new that this wasn't going to be an easy hike.
The hike proved to be as difficult as had thought it may be, that gentle initial grade quickly turned into a steep grade that would continue for a couple of miles before relenting. The rain did not help either, the trail was pretty much a creek in sections and a slippery mud slope at other areas.
Despite the difficulty of the trail there were plenty of places to take a breath and a picture After a difficult hike in I finally reached the area where I could access the creek. The water was very high, and wading the creek looked difficult at best.
The creek was running very hard, I could easily see that in places it was running well over a foot than normal. You could see the grass, lichen , and other growth well below the water line. I didn't hike in this far not to fish so I rigged up and found a place to enter the stream. Normally you would be working plunge pools and the deeper runs. Pretty much the only option for the day was to fish the eddies closer to the banks. Since the water was stained a classic iced tea color and visibility was only a couple of feet I figured I would go with a bright colored hot pink San Juan worm. It proved to do the trick. Almost immediately I began to catch brook trout. I continued to work the water upstream. Crossing was all but impossible so navigating the boulders and other obstacles proved to be a challenge. The fishing was nothing short of awesome considering the water conditions. To my surprise I caught more rainbow trout than I would have expected. I caught around ten or so rainbows in the faster water, which is a bit of a misnomer since all the water this day was fast. All in all I ended up catching and releasing over forty fish. It proved to be quite the spectacular day despite the weather and the strenuous hike. One thing is for sure, I will be returning.
